Facility Feature: Fairfield University, Connecticut

Fairfield University Head Baseball Coach, Bill Currier, is no stranger to On Deck Sports. He and Regional Sales Representative, Erik Turgeon, have a long-standing business relationship. “Our Pitching Coach knows him from playing ball together in college. We’ve dealt with him and AJ King many times in the past, they’re always on point and get right back to me when I need something.”

In 2019, Fairfield University received a generous donation designated towards creating an indoor “hitting barn” for the baseball and softball teams to train in and hold live hitting and pitching practices during the off season. The donor also wanted to make sure the space was outfitted with high quality products that will last for years to come. Currier knew he would only trust one company to fulfill the donor’s wishes, and he called Turgeon.

Fairfield University Hitting Barn

The hitting barn is now a 4,000 sq.ft. turf facility with a protective shell net, and one retractable divider curtain.

The netting layout gives them the ability to split into two 70’ long batting cages, or one 2,000 sq.ft. turf field for ground ball and defensive work. Currier upgraded from the common #36-gauge netting to a #60-gauge because it will last even longer.

The hitting barn’s floor surface is GT34 padded turf, which Currier explains, “We chose GT34 because of quality. We’ll be hitting ground balls and having decent foot traffic and I know it won’t wear out easily.”

While Fairfield was not able to utilize the hitting barn much in their 2020 season, the players are excited to be able to get extra swings and workouts in year round, and Currier looks forward to working with Erik Turgeon, AJ King, and On Deck Sports in the future.
